How to Choose Warm Kids Halloween Costumes this October

How to Choose Warm Kids Halloween Costumes this October

How to Choose Warm Kids Halloween Costumes this October

As a mother living in Alaska, I have developed tried-and-true tips on choosing warm kids Halloween costumes for my family! For some, the end of October still flaunts warm weather, but for most, the weather has already turned chilly. For others like myself, Halloween dips into negative temperatures and even include snow! Whether you’re planning to purchase or DIY a kids Halloween costume this year, keep these points in mind!

Consider the Costume

The best kids costumes have warm accessories and outerwear as an essential part of the look! Jackets, capes, faux-fur, hats/hoods, gloves, long sleeves and full-length designs are what I am drawn to for kids Halloween costumes. Turning a coat or bunting into a warm kids costume is another great option. When these items are logically included into a Halloween costume, it becomes much easier to keep little ones warm!

Best Features for Layering

Some costumes lend to layering better than others. The biggest problem I have encountered when it comes to warm kids Halloween costumes involve fitted waistlines, like with princess dresses. If your child wants this type of costume – size up so you can layer easily! If your toddler is open to other options, then steer clear of fitted waistlines! The best types of costumes to choose for layering involve full-body onesies.

Age Dependent Costumes

Dressing your child up for Halloween can look different depending on how old they are. If you have a baby, add accessories to a bunting suit to create a simple, yet adorable warm Halloween costume. For toddlers, make sure to size-up so their layers fit comfortably. Older kids can size-up a fitted costume for comfort and layering or find great costume options in oversized fleece onesies.

How to Layer Correctly

Proper layering is key to keeping your kiddos warm, whether you need just one layer under a costume, or three! This is why sizing up, or choosing a large onesie is so important.

Here’s a guide on how to properly layer:

  1. Base Layer – Moisture-wicking fabric
  2. Middle Layer – Warm and cozy fleece
  3. Outer Layer – Waterproof and windproof
  4. Top Layer – Oversized or Roomy Costume

Although Halloween can be stressful when you are trying to keep your children warm and comfortable, it doesn’t have to be! Planning ahead and choosing the right warm kids Halloween costumes can easily ease that stress. Not to mention, everyone will be happier in the long run!
