Meet Our Founder – Florence Luo
“Growing up playing in the dirt, I’ve always believed in the power and magic of getting little ones out into nature.”
Growing up in a cotton producing area in rural China, Florence learned to make clothing at a young age, from hand spinning and dying, to knitting and sewing. At the age of 25, Florence left China on a scholarship to pursue engineering at the University of Minnesota. Years later, with two small children in tow, Florence and her family settled in Vancouver, Canada where she turned her original idea of the Gro-With-Me® adjustable sun hat to a fan-favourite product.
In 2008, local Vancouver stores began stocking her sun hats. As business grew, Florence created Jan & Jul – short for January and July – a brand for kids’ all-weather clothing. Learn more about Florence’s journey here.
Florence saw firsthand how difficult life was for women in her village. That is why Jan & Jul is proud to support women in China with fair wages, a positive work environment, and annual bonuses. Our production team is based in Florence’s hometown of Nanjing, China, and is managed by Florence’s sister, Mei. Stemming from a passion of sewing, empowering women in China and Canada is at the core of all that we do.
Giving back locally and worldwide is always a priority for Jan & Jul.
Every holiday season, our “Mittens for a Cause” campaign raises funds for the World Food Programme. Since 2018, we have donated a total of 52,520 meals for school-aged children in need.
We are deeply connected with our local communities and are ready to help whenever we can. Last year in 2021 alone, Jan & Jul donated over $20,000 to the Canadian Red Cross as our province battled against severe fires and floods.
