How to Choose the Best Mittens for Kids!

How to Choose the Best Mittens for Kids!

How to Choose the Best Mittens for Kids!

Cold weather is right around the corner so we’re comparing the best mittens and gloves for kids, for any outdoor activity! Having quality gear can make or break time outdoors for your little one. My 4-year-old loves to play with all things in nature even when it is cold and wet out! Having comfy mittens to keep hands warm and dry is important for extending our time outside. He’s also pretty independent, so we look for ones he can put on himself, like the Jan & Jul options. From knit to waterproof, there’s something for every outdoor adventure!

Knit Mittens

On a dry and chilly day, these knit mittens are a perfect choice. They’re lined with the softest cozy fleece for warmth and have stretchy knit fabric that’s great for growing hands. I love it when my kids get more than one season out of their outerwear!

Fleece Mittens

We love fleece mittens for snow. They’re moisture-wicking and insulated, so they keep little hands warm, even when wet. There are lots of beautiful solid colours to choose from (to mix and match with all the awesome gear Jan & Jul offers!). The longer ribbed cuffs help them stay on and give a bit of extra length to tuck into sleeves.

Rain Mittens

These are the best mittens for kids if you live in a wet and temperate climate, or in fall and spring. They’re backed with an inner waterproof membrane, so they stay 100% waterproof long term. We bring these to the beach on cool days for exploring the rocks in the ocean. The palms have great grip to keep hold of all the slippery treasures. The kid friendly thumb makes them easy to put on independently. They’ve also got an elastic wrist and cuff which keeps them snug and in place!

Toasty-Dry Snow Mittens

The warmest option of all the mittens is the Toasty-Dry Snow Mittens. Best for cold weather play in slush, snow, and ice, these are rated down to -15° Celsius. My favourite features on the mittens are the elastic toggle around the arm and the adjustable wrist—you get the perfect fit while they keep snow out of the sleeves and warmth in. Another 100% waterproof choice insulated for winter, the outer material is also soil-repellent, making these the best mittens for kids who love muddy play!

Toasty-Dry Snow Gloves

As my kids have grown, they've started preferring gloves for better dexterity during winter play. Jan & Jul's Waterproof Snow Gloves are perfect for snowy adventures! They keep little hands warm and dry down to -15°C with heavy-duty 3M Thinsulate™ insulation and a cozy fleece liner. The textured grip on the palm and thumb lets them build snow forts and grip ski poles with ease.

I love the adjustable wrist strap and wide elastic cuff—they stay securely in place, keeping snow out and warmth in. Plus, the soil-repellent fabric means cleanup is a breeze—just a quick rinse, and they're ready for the next outing!

So whether you get knee-deep snow or have a rainy winter like us on the west coast, Jan & Jul has the right mittens or gloves for your littles. I know from experience, having the perfect pair will help extend your child’s love of outdoor play!
